FEM techniques for the LCR reformulation of viscoelastic flow problems

چکیده
We present special numerical techniques for viscoelastic fluid flow utilizing a fully coupled monolithic multigrid finite element approach with consistent edge-oriented stabilization technique. The governing equations arise from the Navier-Stokes for the Oldroyd-B type of fluid with the help of the log-conformation reformulation to allow a wide range of Weissenberg numbers. The resulting nonlinear system consists of 6 variables for velocity, pressure and the logarithm of the conformation stress tensor in 2D. The system is discretized in time by using a fully implicit second order accurate time integrator. In each time step, we have to solve a discretized system in space employing the high order finite element triple Q2/P 1 /Q2. We utilize the discrete damped Newton method with divided differences for handling the Jacobian, and apply a geometrical multigrid solver with a special Vanka smoother to handle the linear subproblems. Local refinement can be assigned at regions of interest to reduce the computational cost. The presented methodology is implemented on the open source software package FEATFLOW (www.featflow.de) and validated for several well-known benchmark problems.

متن کاملEfficient FEM Solvers for Incompressible Nonlinear Flow Models
We present special numerical techniques for non-Newtonian flows including non-isothermal, shear/pressure dependent and particularly viscoelastic effects which are based on the logconformation reformulation (LCR), including Oldroyd-B and Giesekus-type fluids as prototypical models. We utilize a fully coupled monolithic finite element approach which treats the velocity, pressure, temperature and ...
متن کاملA General Boundary Element Formulation for The Analysis of Viscoelastic Problems
The analysis of viscoelastic materials is one of the most important subjects in engineering structures. Several works have been so far made for the integral equation methods to viscoelastic problems. From the basic assumptions of viscoelastic constitutive equations and weighted residual techniques, a simple but effective Boundary Element (BE) formulation is developed for the Kelvin viscoelastic...
متن کاملTime dependent finite element analysis of the linear stability of viscoelastic flows with interfaces
In this paper we present a new time marching scheme for the time dependent simulation of viscoelastic flows governed by constitutive equations of differential form. Based on the ideas of Carvalho and Scriven [J. Comput. Phys. 151 (1999) 534], a domain perturbation technique is introduced that can be applied to viscoelastic flows with fluid/fluid interfaces or free surfaces. This work mainly foc...
متن کاملFlow of viscoelastic fluids past a cylinder at high Weissenberg number: stabilized simulations using matrix logarithms
The log conformation representation proposed in [1] has been implemented in a fem context using the DEVSS/DG formulation for viscoelastic fluid flow. We present a stability analysis in 1D and attribute the high Weissenberg problem to the failure of the numerical scheme to balance exponential growth. A slightly different derivation of the log based evolution equation than in [1] is also presente...
